Salt spray, strong sunlight and tight deck spaces make life at sea challenging enough without battling poor visibility on critical displays. A marine customer came to Relec needing a solution that could withstand harsh conditions while still delivering crystal-clear visuals for their crews outdoors.

The brief combined practicality with precision. The customer wanted a display that was:

Large enough to be read by groups, yet compact enough for restricted areas
Sunlight-readable for clear visibility on deck
Available in both touch and non-touch formats to suit varied tasks
Built from materials able to endure long-term exposure to salt and weather

They also asked for data on power consumption, and wanted reassurance that the design could be trialled in small numbers before committing to a full fleet installation.

Relec recommended the 17.3” FHD TFT LCD Display as the starting point. With its 1000 cd/m² brightness and full HD resolution, it was well placed to tackle outdoor conditions. We explored enhancements to fine-tune the design:

Optical bonding and custom glass to reduce glare and add protective strength
Options for PCAP or resistive touch panels, depending on whether operators wore gloves
Guidance on marine-grade housings, ensuring corrosion resistance and durability
Clear specification data on power consumption and lifespan, giving engineers confidence in system design

The refined solution gave the customer exactly what they needed: a clear, sunlight-readable screen that crews could rely on day after day. With wide viewing angles, long backlight life and options for touch or non-touch operation, the displays balanced flexibility with robustness. Starting with a prototype run, the customer could see how the system would scale confidently across their wider fleet.
