Our customer wanted a 75W DC DC converter to replace an existing AC DC power supply within an actuator used for fluid valve control. The actuators had to be driven from a DC source derived from solar panel and would be fitted in remote sites with no access to mains electricity. The DC DC converter had to meet the following unique requirements:

Size constraints, with connectors in specific points

Heat had to dissipated into the main casting

Protection against motor generated back emfs and lightning strikes.

Protection against reverse polarity protection

The CHB100W conduction cooled half brick dc dc converters sourced from Cincon were the ideal building blocks for this application. They are compact and designed specifically for conduction cooling. We recommended the addition of a custom cooling plate and EMC filtering designed to withstand the demands of large electrical surges and issues from back EMFs associated with inductive loads. We were able to offer a simple and effective turnkey solution within the customer’s cost target.

Over 8 weeks we shared layout information and breadboard test data before shipping the first working units. We then supported the customer throughout their own performance and EMC tests where we were able to modify and cost reduce the units further to provide an optimised solution.
