Custom AC-DC Power Supply for Robotics

A manufacturer of a humanoid desktop robot approached Relec looking for an alternative AC-DC desktop power supply. Their existing solution was becoming increasingly difficult to source due to poor availability, rising costs and limited international safety approvals.

They required a reliable external power supply that could reduce costs while meeting the performance and approval requirements of a global product.

    Following a visit to the customer’s facility, Relec gained a detailed understanding of how the AC-DC power supply was integrated into the robot.

    The investigation revealed that the existing solution was creating unnecessary design compromises. The fixed DC cable restricted where the power supply could be mounted, while the standard DC connector lacked a secure locking mechanism, raising concerns over long-term reliability and accidental disconnection.

    Rather than recommending a standard replacement, Relec worked with the customer to identify opportunities for a custom power supply that better suited the application.

    Working alongside EDAC, Relec supplied a customised version of the EA1300 Series AC-DC power supply, specifically configured for the customer’s robotic application.

    The solution included:

    • Custom DC cable length to suit the preferred installation location.
    • Screw-locking DC connector for a secure and reliable power connection.
    • Maintained CEC Level VI energy efficiency.
    • Increased global safety approvals.
    • Lower overall system cost.
